2nd Victory at the EUDIS Hackathon: Aegis Medic Wins in Prague

2025-05-11

Summary: Three of our members triumphed at the 2025 EUDIS Hackathon in Prague with Aegis Medic - an offline AI-powered first aid app that runs on a standard smartphone and dramatically improves battlefield survival rates. Competing against international university teams, they secured one of six top wins in Europe.

On May 11, 2025, the EU Defence Innovation Scheme (EUDIS) Hackathon was held in Prague, Czech Republic. Representing the gifted student program at HTL Spengergasse and the Austrian Excellence Society, Ben Koska, Mojmír Horváth, and Richard Senger developed a breakthrough solution within just 48 hours: Aegis Medic, an offline, AI-powered first responder app designed to save lives on the battlefield.

Running entirely on a standard smartphone from the previous year (~€499), Aegis Medic operates fully offline and delivers real-time, life-saving medical instructions. Key features include:

  • A 6,000+ page knowledge base from military and humanitarian medical manuals (US Army, ICRC, NATO, WHO).
  • Sub-3-second response times via chat or voice for urgent guidance—such as treating severe bleeding.
  • A 98% accuracy rate on practical medical queries—vastly outperforming leading models like GPT-4o (32%) and phi-4-mm (12%).

Aegis Medic addresses a critical gap: a U.S. Department of Defense autopsy study revealed that 17,000 of 70,000 fallen soldiers over the past 30 years might have survived with correct first aid. The app empowers soldiers in high-pressure situations to take immediate, informed action—even without internet access.

Beyond military use, Aegis Medic’s low cost and offline capabilities make it highly attractive for disaster relief and humanitarian missions. The team is already planning expansions to wearables and unmanned systems to broaden its impact.

With this win, the Austrian Excellence Society remains undefeated: following Ben Koska’s 2024 win in Milan, this year’s victory makes us the only team to win both editions of the EUDIS Hackathon.
